Hrbek announced bid for Town Council seat.

Former Front Royal Vice Mayor Bret Hrbek announced Tuesday that he will seek a seat on the Front Royal Town Council in the May elections. Hrbek made his announcement live on the News at Noon. Two years ago, Hrbek lost his re-election bid. He explained that after two years of sitting on the side lines, he believed it is time to return to public service. As a councilman, Hrbek said he was a lead voice to end the county’s B-POL tax, added a moment of silence to the town’s meeting agenda and the town’s effort to remove Virginia’s abuser driver statute from the town code.

Two women apprehended for suspicious traveler's checks.

Frederick County authorities say two women are in custody after using suspicious traveler’s checks at a convenience store. According to dispatchers, the call came in shortly after 1 am Wednesday from the Sheetz store on U. S. Route 7. After leaving that convenience store, the two unidentified women traveled to Clarke County and stopped at another convenience store. That is where Clarke County deputies apprehended the women and detained them until Frederick County authorities could arrive. The women apparently hit several Sheetz stores, including Millwood Avenue and U.S. Route 11 north of Winchester.

West Virginia man takes own life while riding in a vehicle.

Virginia State Police say a man shot himself early Tuesday morning while riding in a vehicle on Interstate 81 in Frederick County. According to a press release, 26-year-old Jonathan Barnhart of Capon Bridge, West Virginia, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while he was riding in an SUV near the Virginia-West Virginia line. Following the incident, the driver immediately pulled over and called for help. Neither the driver nor another passenger were injured in the incident. Authorities do not suspect foul play, but the shooting does remain under investigation.

'Triggerman' revision up for key committee vote.

Legislation to expand the death penalty in Virginia is up for a key vote at the General Assembly. The Republican-backed bill would redefine the so-called triggerman rule, which in most cases restricts the death penalty to the person who does the actual killing. The bill would allow the death penalty for accomplices who share the intent to kill. Area Delegate Todd Gilbert's bill is on the docket for Wednesday afternoon's Senate Courts of Justice Committee meeting. Two weeks ago, the Senate's own version of the bill, sponsored by area Senator Mark Obenshain, died in the courts committee on a 7-7 party line vote, with one Republican abstaining because he accepts court appointments to represent capital murder defendants. The same vote on the House bill would doom the triggerman revision for the fifth consecutive year.
